“Frank (Otis) likes to tackle difficult issues – straight on. He runs towards the bon fire, rather than backs away. He likes to put characters in high-pressure situations then stands back and watches them explode. He documents the personal destruction of our times, The mini-explosions. There is a real danger to his work”
This is how Alex Broun (Short And Sweet) describes Frank Otis’ writing in an article featured in Australian Stage Online. The article looks at the work of Otis and talks about how Defector Art Theatre is working in close collaboration with Short And Sweet, the largest short play festival in the world.
Although Otis writes long plays to, he is no stranger to the short play medium having written over 30. However Defector Art is not planning to perform Frank Otis’ work only, it never has. Shortly we will be calling for scripts for this years Fringe Festival where, all going well we will be performing Box-a-shorts 2. Yes even we do sequels!
Defector Art Theatre was chosen along with just two other theatre companies for this. The other two are Melbourne Writers Theatre and Crash Test Drama (love the name). This is no small achievement for Defector Art.
Defector Art Theatre is proud to be working with Alex and Short And Sweet. We think that the whole concept of Short And Sweet is great idea that’s come into motion, and having an entry in last year we were not disappointed! (We didn’t win but we are almost over that). Short And Sweet gives a great opportunity for up and coming actors, writers and directors in a venue (the Victorian Arts Centre) that most of us only dream of performing in. We look forward to a long association with Short And Sweet.
